The
city firstly appeared
in the Neolithic era
having as a first significant
milestone the 17th century
when there was the development
of the most important
Minoan center of western
Crete.
Due to the construction
of a plain harbor and
the rapid development
of manufacturing and
merchandize, the city
gathers significant
power and wealth; also
indicated from the fact
that it was one of the
few cities which had
their own coin.
Because of the strategic
location, the history
of this city refers
to it as a continuous
challenge and a significant
meeting point for many
tribes and civilizations.
Until 1913, when Crete
finally unified with
the rest of Greece,
many foreigners such
as Arabs, Romans, Byzantines,
Venetians, Turks fought
for this city domination.
Even though invaders
continuously kept ruining
the city, with the big
bombing from the Nazi
during World War II
destroying the greatest
part of the old city,
many buildings have
been saved and preserved
from the Byzantine and
the Turkish era.
The Venetian harbor,
the ancient city full
of narrow, paved streets
and high manor houses,
set a unique nostalgic
atmosphere that travels
the visitor to past
times.
The old city, the harbor
with the lighthouse,
the castle and the old
Neoria, the public market
- unique in the Balkans
-, the public garden,
the stylish small cafes
and bars with magnificent
harbor view, the high
market traffic, many
archeological museums,
monasteries of the Byzantine
era and monuments from
the past and modern
history of the city,
the famous Cretan hospitality,
the delicious Cretan
cuisine, the vivid nightlife,
plenty of local happenings
and festivals together
with the increased potential
of various excursions
to locations of distinct
natural beauty like
the Samaria gorge, are
some essential reasons
for Chania city being
among the first choices
of the domestic as well
as the incoming tourism.
Chania is the city where
tradition comes back
to life and contributes
in the humanization
of future evolution.

Limnoupolis
is located on a beautiful,
emerald area 8 km from
the city of Chania,
near the community of
Varipetro.
Transportation is regular
and continuous; scheduled
itineraries of the local
bus services (KTEL),
private vehicles, rental
vehicles or buses via
tour operators and agents
and/ or the company.
The total area reserved
by the current activities
of Limnoupolis is almost
100 yards, one of the
largest in Greece.
The city of Chania is
located on the northwestern
(NW) part of the district,
lying among the old
harbor and Kasteli hill.
It is connected to the
entire world through
sea and air.
Souda bay, one of the
biggest Mediterranean
natural harbors is linked
daily to Athens; while
the Kastelli harbor
on the west side of
the district connects
constantly with the
southern part of Peloponnese.
The international airport
of Chania is a passage
for thousands of visitors
that arrive to tour
the districts of Chania
and Rethymnon via daily
flights from Athens
and Thessaloniki, as
well as from charter
flights from all over
the world.

Chania
district has 140.000
inhabitants. The upper
-employment levels,
the increased private
banking and wealth of
the private sector as
well as the large number
of the busy small businesses,
qualify the high standard
of living and the consequent
high consuming ability
of the local population.
Although the district's
economy is attributed
to agricultural and
farming resources; still
the highest earnings
are from services offered
mainly in the tourism
sector.
In 1996, 250.000 organized
tourists visited the
district of Chania;
while other sources
that calculated the
movement of independent
tourists state that
the total amount of
tourists on the island
surpassed 400.000.
The city of Chania is
an entertainment attraction
for the residents of
the rest of Crete; particularly
for the Rethymnon district
residents.
